Live My Experience
Disability awareness at the beach and the shopping centre.
Part of Central Coast Council's strategy to improve disability access and inclusion. Instead of a checklist of ramps, it lets community members, businesses and council staff feel, briefly and safely, what everyday barriers are like from the inside.
A first-person experience set in two places most people never think twice about: a beach and a shopping centre. Delivered more than 200 times, it is used in teacher training, council staff training and CSIRO-facilitated sessions.
From exclusion to inclusion
- Exclusion: being prevented or denied access because of difference
- Segregation: needs are catered for, but separately from everyone else
- Integration: placed in the mainstream, but expected to adapt to it
- Inclusion: the environment is designed so everyone can take part
“The experience was an incredible eye opener into the difficulties faced by people with a disability to engage in everyday activities.”Participant
